Pamphlet on Witham Schools
Pamphlet on Witham Schools by M.L.Smith
This Pamphlet about Witham Schools was written in 1971. The pamphlet considers education in general and specifically in Witham back to the 1600's.
There is information on the establishment of the National School in Witham, originally at the End of the Avenue near Easton Road in January 1814. The New National School was built in Guithavon Street, next to All Saints Church, with the first stone being laid by Lord Rayleigh in 1841. The British School is also covered in the pamphlet, opening in Maldon Road in 1837, for the education of 'both male and female' children.
Information on population, attendance and attitudes to education are all considered, rounding off with the opening of many of the schools that we recognise now.
